The Prize Winner of Defiance Ohio

By Terry Ryan. This was a pretty good memoir of the author's childhood and her mother. We watched the film a few weeks back, starring Julianne Moore as the prize winning jingle writer. I didn't know this, but back in the 50's and 60's, there were a lot of company sponsored contests with prizes ranging from coffee makers and bikes to cars, cash, and trips. Through wit and grit, Evelyn Ryan managed to keep her family of 10 children out of desperate poverty through her winnings. Her jingles provided both the down payment for a house, and well as the money required to pay off a second mortgage her alcoholic husband had taken out without her knowledge.
